The MG VA was quite a limited edition model developed by Morris Motors Limited. Production ran from February 1937 to September 1939. Within this time, only 2,407 numbers had been produced, of which 1,259 were the Saloon version. With a tuned 1.5-litre twin-carb version of the Morris TPBG overhead-valve four-cylinder, which was also in the Wolseley 12/48 and the Morris 12, the VA produced a useful 54 hp and could easily reach 80 km/h. Other features included a four-speed synchromesh gearbox, 10-inch Lockheed hydraulic drum brakes, adjustable Luvax shock absorbers, sporty 19-inch wire wheels, built-in hydraulic Jackall jacks and a bumper stabiliser to dampen front-end sagging.
This beautiful green MG VA is from 1938. It was produced on 11 October 1937, but was first registered one year later. Since 2008, it was owned by a Dutch collector and registered for the first time on Dutch registration in mid-2019. It is original British, meaning it is a right-hand drive. The two-tone MG is in nice condition. Especially considering its age. The pre-war car is finished in a combination of Willow Green & British Racing Green. Together with the 'Biscuit leather' interior, the colours really make this beautiful classic radiate.
This model has been fully restored in stages. An engine overhaul has taken place where the 1.5 engine block was bored out to a 1.7. This was equivalent to the police specifications at the time. The body of the MG was completely dismantled and painted in the correct colours. The interior has been updated with the seats, rear seat and door panels reupholstered in leather. It has been fitted with new parts including the wiring harness, brakes and more. The engine is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. It shifts smoothly and runs beautifully. A photo report of the restoration is available.
There are many interesting options and features that come with the MG. Despite being over 85 years old, it is included with a skylight, among others. Apart from this, there are 19-inch multi-spoke rims. When you get into the car, it really is a step back in time. From the all-wood dashboard, to the gold Jaeger dials. Chrome details abound around the car and are also very nice. A rare sight, is the original toolkit present in the back of the boot. The windscreen, with the turn of a lever, folds out. The spare wheel is not found in the back, but namely on der left side next to the wing.
In terms of documentation, various papers are present. There is an original manual along with a parts catalogue. Other documentation is mainly British, as the MG spent most of its life there. Demonstrated by original registration papers, is that this MG VA was owned by the Neave family around 1956. The Neave family was a well-known family in the Fordingbridge area in the 20th century and later throughout Britain. They specialised in baby food, soup and more. Besides the aforementioned photo report of the restoration, there are several invoices, inspections, letters, manuals, and general info from several decades back.
The definition of an oldtimer!
